How Can We Know That Tragic Scars of Memories Are Healed?

On Quora, someone asked:

Everybody has a few memories of a time past of being hurt, carrying guilt, hidden rage. It’s said that, “Time heals all wounds”. Is it true for you? Are you healed or, does it still haunt you?

This was my response:

Time doesn’t heal wounds. Identifying them and reflecting back on them in the third person, as opposed to as the victim, to understand the lesson from each tragedy is what heals wounds. Without learning the lesson, the wounds never heal. Instead, they just bury themselves deep within our subconscious mind, causing us to act in ways we sometimes can’t understand.
